• St. Lawrence Gas, a wholly owned subsidiary of Enbridge Gas Distribution in Canada (the Enbridge Connection) was incorporated in 1957. St. Lawrence Gas served its first natural gas customer in 1962.  With assets of more than $40 million, the Company distributes natural gas to approximately:

  13,800  residential customers

    1,600  commercial customers

        23  industrial customers

• The Company has installed more than 572 miles of gas main and service lines (service map) within a New York State service territory that is about 785 square miles, across St. Lawrence County and a portion of Lewis County.  The Company serves the cities, towns and/or villages of Beaver Falls, Canton, Croghan, Gouverneur, Heuvelton, Lisbon, Madrid, Massena, New Bremen, Norfolk , Norwood, Ogdensburg, Potsdam, Raymondville, and Waddington.  The Company has franchise rights for another 11 municipalities, to expand into Franklin County, if the future economics of the project justify it.

• In the St. Lawrence Gas service territory, over 80% of the available business and residential customers have selected natural gas.  In communities where gas has been available for more than five years, St. Lawrence Gas provides service to about 95% of the available customers.    Of the Company’s total residential and commercial customer base, more than 94% of our customers heat with natural gas.

• On a yearly basis, St. Lawrence Gas distributes over 10 billion cubic feet of gas, the equivalent of about 71 million gallons of oil or enough gas to heat more than 75,000 homes!

• With headquarters in Massena, NY, and a satellite operations building in Ogdensburg, NY, the Company employs a highly trained and skilled workforce of about 40 employees.

• As a public local distribution company, St. Lawrence Gas is regulated by the New York State Department of Public Service Commission.  The Company’s distribution rates for residential service have been the lowest in New York State for more than eight consecutive years.

• Each year, St. Lawrence Gas collects more than $30 million in gas revenues, pays more than $1.1 million in state tax, approximately $0.6 million in federal tax, and about $1.2 million in municipal and property taxes.

• St. Lawrence Gas owns a subsidiary, Enbridge Services, which rents gas utilization equipment such as conversion burners, water heaters, unit heaters and furnaces.

The name Enbridge unites the words "energy" and "bridge" and represents a commitment to provide new products and innovative services that will meet the energy and home comfort needs of our customers. 

St. Lawrence Gas is owned by Enbridge Gas Distribution, one of the fastest growing natural gas companies in North America, serving more than 1.7 million customers across Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick.  Both St. Lawrence Gas and Enbridge Gas Distribution are part of the Enbridge corporation.

Service territory

St. Lawrence Gas distributes natural gas through St. Lawrence County and a portion of Lewis County (shaded pink), a territory that spans about 785 square miles! The Company would like to expand further, but any extension of gas lines is required to be economically “feasible” in five years, according to New York State Public Commission guidelines. Feasibility is calculated by determining the return the Company receives from the expense to install and maintain any new lines.

Our safety record

St. Lawrence Gas is absolutely committed to providing a safe environment for its employees and customers. The Company provides comprehensive training to prepare employees for their job functions. Supervisors conduct safety meetings on a regular basis and discuss topics that are relevant for both work and home. The Company also uses a Joint Environmental Health and Safety Committee (JEHSC) to monitor safety related issues and has won several safety awards.

Community involvement

St. Lawrence Gas is an active and committed community member, contributing our talents and resources to better the areas where we live and work.  We support organizations and events that add to the quality of life in the communities that we serve.  Each year, the employees select a " Charity of the Year" to support and raise money.  In addition, the Company has established a voluntary "Contributions Committee" which  evaluates requests for donations, makes recommendations, and contributes to many worthwhile organizations, including:

Just as important as the financial contributions the Company makes, the employees of St. Lawrence Gas devote their time and energy to many service clubs (Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis), Fraternal Orders (BPOE), community sports programs (as coaches and referees), volunteer organizations (fire departments), and local government (school boards, city council).  These employees are highly respected for their leadership and volunteer efforts.

Charity of the Year

Each year, in January, the Contributions Committee selects a “Charity of the Year.”  Both the Company and the employees make a contribution to this charity.   Past charities the Company has supported, include:

Spotlight on Employees

St. Lawrence Gas has been a huge supporter of the United Way. Employees like Kim Baxter have served to coordinate the Company’s participation in the local United Way campaign. On January 30, 2003, Kim was award the “Individual Community Spirit Award,” joining an elite group of individuals within St. Lawrence County who were recognized for “their extensive service to our community, truly embodying the United Way spirit.” Cynthia Wells, United Way St. Lawrence County Associate (left) delivers the Award to Kim (right).
