Landlords/Tenants

Landlord Agreement

If you are a landlord, you might want to consider maintaining continuous gas service at your rental property. You have the choice of several options with this program:

  • Leave natural gas service on all year
  • Leave natural gas service on in the summer only (June 1 through September 30)
  • Leave natural gas service on in the winter only (October 1 through May 31)

This option will ensure that if a tenant requests gas service to be disconnected, or if a tenant’s service is disconnected for non-payment, service can be maintained and switched to your name. To take advantage of this program, you need to complete and return the Landlord Agreement Application. See complete details on the application form, accessible here.

Shared Meters

When a tenant’s gas meter also registers utility service used outside the tenant’s dwelling, the tenant is not required to pay the charges for the service and the tenant’s landlord must become the utility’s customer. This is the law in New York State. Call us at 1-800-454-2201 if you suspect that you have a Shared Meter or would like  a complete summary of the law.
